Adobe Captivate outshines all of these other tools -Camtasia, Snagit, Powtoons, After Effects, PowerPoint - when it comes to software demonstrations, simulations and/or training videos that contain software demonstrations ( hybrid video containing software demonstrations). But for other types of video, it is less useful, depending on the video type. I tend to use it like I use a power drill - it's a top-of-the-line tool for certain jobs but less useful for others.

Articulate Storyline has less than impressive graphic editing capabilities, no access to the library, and a quirky button set to feature. Their free trial is very limited access to anything in Storyline 360 assets.

Great for Intermediate-Level Instructional Designers!

I think that Articulate360 is more user-friendly and has a cleaner, more updated look. If you can edit a PDF, then you can use Articulate 360. Adobe Captivate may be more challenging for the designer, but it has more features. We chose Adobe Captivate because we want the option to create interactive learning environments. Adobe Captivate plays well with the other Adobe design products including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premier. Additionally, Adoe Captivate is highly compatible with Cornerstone, our preferred Learning Management Systems.

Compared to a program like PowerPoint, Adobe Captivate is much more robust but also more complicated. However, I find thinking of Adobe Captivate as "PowerPoint on steroids" is a good way of thinking about the program. If you can build a PP slide deck, you can probably build a basic Adobe Captivate course. I also used Flash in the distant past, and in comparison, I feel like Adobe Captivate is MUCH LESS intimidating than Flash was, so that's a major positive.
