What is Atlassian Jira?

Atlassian Jira is a project management tool software used by agile teams and supports any agile methodology, be it scrum, kanban, or a team's own unique flavor. From agile boards to reports, users can plan, track, and manage agile software development projects. And since not every team works the same way, Jira Software allows teams to customize workflows, permissions, and schemes to match the unique needs of each team.

Jira templates also support use cases in enterprise marketing management, and projects to support operations, design HR, and enterprise marketing management.

With Jira Software, teams are able to:

  • Track versions, features, and progress at a glance
  • Re-prioritize user stories and bugs
  • Estimate stories, adjust sprint scope, check velocity, and re-prioritize issues
  • Estimate, track and report on story points; become more accurate
  • Report on agile metrics to provide real-time, actionable data on team efficiency, quality, and overall performance
  • Integrate with all the tools their dev team is already using, from the rest of the Atlassian suite (Bitbucket, Bamboo, Fisheye, and Crucible) to other popular developer tools on-premise or cloud (e.g., GitHub and Jenkins).
  • Provide greater flexibility to curate which teams have access to which information with sprint and project-level permissions
  • Flexibly tailor Jira tasks and their workflows to a specific team's use case
  • Extend Jira with over 1,800 apps from the Atlassian Marketplace to fit any capability not provided by default

Trello is amazing for simple project management and great for non-technical teams, but it lacks the depth and complexity of JIRA for detailed issue tracking and complex workflows. Asana, similar to Trello, is great for simple and lightweight project management but isn't suitable for technical project management like JIRA.

Game Changer in Task Distribution and Team Monitoring

Compared to Trello, Atlassian Jira offers more comprehensive tracking and complex workflows. Asana provides greater flexibility but lacks Atlassian Jira’s depth in handling technical projects. Azure DevOps excels in development pipelines, yet Atlassian Jira’s customization, integrations, and agile features made it the best choice for my needs, particularly for large-scale projects. for 19 seconds chose Atlassian Jira because it provides powerful workflow customization and robust integration while also handling complex projects with ease. In comparison, Trello and Asana offer simplicity, and Azure DevOps caters to development pipelines. Atlassian Jira’s balance of detailed tracking and adaptability made it best for our technical needs, decisively so.

Haven't evaluated other products like the Jira Software, since Jira is the top competitor in this field and everyone relies on it since it gets the job done.
Jira is a very important tool in almost any kind of project, helping to track down the work of all the team members and provides a good overview of the project, having a lot of widgets and customizations.

Compared to GitLab, Jira offers a lot more features and details. The GitLab feature is nice for small projects or teams but we are multiple teams with multiple topics and projects even inside one team - so Jira is more applicable for our case. Azure DevOps offers a comparable set of features and much more extras, like an code repository and collaboration tool like GitLab - but as we already rely on other tools like that, Azure DevOps would have had a bigger integration time and more complexity. This can be a good tool when you have a fresh start but in our case, Jira was easier to integrate in our daily work.

Over bloated, needs a full redesign and simplification

I didn't pick Jira, it was imposed to me from my employer. If it were for me i would probably have used Linear, since i think it's much more streamlined and doesn't really have tons of less features, but rather an extremely simplified interface that can even work perfectly as a desktop experience (which by the way, BAD MOVE ATLASSIAN cutting the native app!)
