What is Atlassian Jira?

Atlassian Jira is a project management tool software used by agile teams and supports any agile methodology, be it scrum, kanban, or a team's own unique flavor. From agile boards to reports, users can plan, track, and manage agile software development projects. And since not every team works the same way, Jira Software allows teams to customize workflows, permissions, and schemes to match the unique needs of each team.

Jira templates also support use cases in enterprise marketing management, and projects to support operations, design HR, and enterprise marketing management.

With Jira Software, teams are able to:

  • Track versions, features, and progress at a glance
  • Re-prioritize user stories and bugs
  • Estimate stories, adjust sprint scope, check velocity, and re-prioritize issues
  • Estimate, track and report on story points; become more accurate
  • Report on agile metrics to provide real-time, actionable data on team efficiency, quality, and overall performance
  • Integrate with all the tools their dev team is already using, from the rest of the Atlassian suite (Bitbucket, Bamboo, Fisheye, and Crucible) to other popular developer tools on-premise or cloud (e.g., GitHub and Jenkins).
  • Provide greater flexibility to curate which teams have access to which information with sprint and project-level permissions
  • Flexibly tailor Jira tasks and their workflows to a specific team's use case
  • Extend Jira with over 1,800 apps from the Atlassian Marketplace to fit any capability not provided by default

Atlassian Jira
2 years of experience
  • Integration of tools like Bitbucket, Github, etc., has made it easier to track the code changes, pull requests, and branches linked to the respective ticket.
  • The detailed tracking system in JIRA has helped the teams prioritize and understand the project tasks and issues.
  • JIRA's project tracking board helps you keep track of the project, its flow, and expectations in a structured format.
Cons
  • Our Engineering teams occasionally deal with delays when filtering large backlogs of issues. Jira could work on improving this.
  • I have observed that non-technical teams/team members often struggle with JQL queries when creating dashboards, etc. A simplified filter tool would be helpful.
  • More control over the organization's email notification system would be helpful. With this control, we could reduce and customize the irrelevant update emails and get notified only about important updates.

Game Changer in Task Distribution and Team Monitoring

Rating: 6 out of 10

  • Improve compliance & risk management
  • Improve supplier or partner relationships
  • Improve customer relations/service
  • Cost management
Cons
  • UI could be more easier for some of the views.
  • The cost is quite high
  • The level of permissions is only there at the top level, many times, a just lower ranked person is stuck because one the admins have right to give certain permissions, there could be a permission management system more robust and customisable.

  • Bug tracking
  • Project management
  • Email notifications
  • Test case management
Cons
  • I do not have any cons related to the app
  • Jira has multiple versions, and if working on multiple projects on different Jira versions, might create a little confusion

Atlassian Jira does great job in Sprint Planning

Rating: 9 out of 10
March 25, 2025
  • My development team follows Scrum and uses Atlassian Jira to manage the sprints.
  • Atlassian Jira does very well in Backlog Grooming, product managers create & prioritise user stories in the backlog.
  • Atlassian Jira does great job in Sprint Planning, we pull tasks into a sprint board, estimate effort using story points, & assign tickets.
  • Atlassian Jira does very well in Sprint Review & Retrospective, it generates burn down charts & velocity reports to analyse sprint performance.
Cons
  • Atlassian Jira boards become sluggish and slow when handling too many issues concurrently.
  • JQL (Jira Query Language) searches take long time on large datasets. Sometimes, the system also hangs.
  • Reports & dashboards lag when fetching data in real time.
